Glasgow’s Gusty Pasture | Mussey

The first time you pull up to Glasgow’s Gusty Pasture, the place feels like it’s been built slowly and deliberately. A small green shed marks the farm entrance, and the rest of the homestead stretches out behind it—garden beds, chicken tractors, and the steady hum of bees working the flowers.

The story started nearly twenty years ago, long before the farm existed. After their first child was born, the search for healthier food turned into a curiosity that kept growing. A tiny backyard garden in Ferndale became sweet corn in Warren, then a bigger garden in Waterford, and eventually the land they now call home. Six years ago, that dream finally took shape: chickens, honeybees, goats, and a garden larger than they ever expected.

Today, Glasgow’s Gusty Pasture raises rotational pasture‑raised poultry, moving birds daily so they can forage and enjoy fresh grass and sunshine. Their laying hens produce pasture‑raised eggs and eat certified local organic feed. The garden is no‑till and chemical‑free, full of seasonal vegetables, herbs, flowers, and medicinal plants. Honeybees contribute to handcrafted beeswax candles, natural body care products, freeze‑dried foods, baked goods, and pantry staples.

One of their favorite projects is the Pasture Reserve Program, which lets families reserve poultry before it’s raised and choose the feed—non‑GMO, certified local organic, or certified organic soy‑free. It’s a simple way for people to feel connected to their food and the farmer behind it.

The work isn’t easy. Weather, predators, and long days test even the most committed grower. But hearing someone say, “This tastes like food used to,” or “I’m glad I found a farmer I trust,” makes the early mornings worth it. The land keeps teaching them patience and reminding them that everything on a farm works together—soil, plants, animals, and the people who care for them.

If there’s one piece of advice they’d give anyone dreaming of a farm, it’s this: start where you are. Plant the garden. Raise a few chickens. Don’t wait for perfect timing. And don’t compare your beginning to someone else’s middle.

You can find Glasgow’s Gusty Pasture at The Little Green Shed on the farm, at the Port Austin Farmers Market, the Roots Farmers Market, and at local events throughout the year. A website is on the way, and for now, they’re just a Facebook message away.
